pattern :: cochram

Cochram is a quick, easy, and trendy slouchy hat pattern just in time for the cooling weather. Worked up in Plymouth Yarns Haciendo, this hat has an interesting and attractive texture due to the yarn's thick-and-thin spin. It knits up so quickly you can knit it, start to finish, by the end of Star Trek: First Contact.

Materials:
1 skein of Plymouth Yarns Haciendo (100% Extra Fine Merino Wool, 109 yds/100g) in Tan
US 10 (6mm) 16" circular needle
set of four US 10 dpns
stitch marker
tapestry needle

Gauge:
3 sts x 5 rows = 1" in stockinette
(this can vary slightly due to the thick-and-thin nature of the yarn)

Abbreviations:
k2tog = knit two stitches together (decrease)
sts = stitches

Finished Measurements:
approx. 21" in circumference, made to fit average adult head

Pattern:
Using 16" circular needle, cast on 64 sts. Join in the round, placing stitch marker to indicate beginning of the round.
Work a 1x1 rib (knit 1, purl 1) for 1".
Switching to stockinette stitch, work one round all in knit stitches until the end, decreasing one stitch across round. [63 sts]
Work in stockinette (knit all stitches) until hat measures approximately 7" from cast-on edge.

Work decrease rounds as follows (switch to dpns when stitches no longer fit on circular needle):
1: *Knit 7, k2tog, repeat from * until end. [56 sts]
2: Knit all stitches.
3: *Knit 6, k2tog, repeat from * until end. [49 sts]
4: Knit all stitches.
5: *Knit 5, k2tog, repeat from * until end. [42 sts]
6: Knit all stitches.
7: *Knit 4, k2tog, repeat from * until end. [35 sts]
8: Knit all stitches.
9: *Knit 3, k2tog, repeat from * until end. [28 sts]
10: Knit all stitches.
11: *Knit 2, k2tog, repeat from * until end. [21 sts]
12: Knit all stitches.
13: *Knit 1, k2tog, repeat from * until end [14 sts]
14: *k2tog, repeat from * until end [7 sts]

Break yarn, leaving a tail at least 6" long. Thread tail through remaining stitches, pull through and fasten off with tail on inside of hat. Weave in ends.
