Music Thursday :: Ashes to Ashes, David Bowie

Okay, I admit that my love of this song was really solidified because of Ashes to Ashes, but I find the music video for David Bowie's spaceclown years pretty entertaining.

I missed Music Monday this week, so let's just call it Music Thursday instead. (Though let's be honest, every day is a music day.)

Okay, I admit that my love of this song was really solidified because of Ashes to Ashes, but I find the music video for David Bowie's spaceclown years pretty entertaining.

Thinking back on the use of this song for the sister program of Life On Mars is pretty clever if you really dig into the lyrics. I mean, yes, it mentions never doing anything out of the blue, which fits DI Alex Drake's personality as a straight-laced officer going into the series. There's also the creepy-ass clown imagery from the video that was used throughout the series.

But for me the brilliance of using this song for the programme Ashes to Ashes is how it references Major Tom. While Life on Mars doesn't actually mention Major Tom, Space Oddity sure does. Interestingly, Space Oddity was a hit before Life on Mars. For the programs this is kind of a moot point; we see the past through the lenses of the main characters, and Bowie is timeless, so jumbling up his big hits is forgivable. But what's really clever, for me anyway, is referring to a character in a song before Life on Mars, before Ashes to Ashes itself. It's like the program is going all the way back, tying up everything from even before we meet Sam Tyler.

Pretty dang clever if you ask me.

And if you have no idea what I'm talking about, go watch Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes.
